You don’t even need a PayPal account, you can pay with your credit or debit card, PayPal handles the transaction. When checking out, select "Don't have a PayPal account? Use your credit card or bank account (where available)." This will allow you to pay by Mastercard, Visa/Delta, Electron, American Express, Switch, Maestro and Solo cards - without the need to open a PayPal account.
Any recurring payments are automatically processed through your PayPal account, and if your PayPal account doesn't have enough funds in it, the money automatically comes out of your bank account, just like a normal Direct Debit would.
